Complete paralysis of the lower half of the body including both legs and involuntary bladder and bowel functioning, usually caused by damage to the spinal cord.

Swasraya is a Centre for Training and Rehabilitating the victims of Paraplegia, is managed by a registered trust headed by His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius, Metropolitan of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Diocese of Kandanad (East). The Centre is located at Vettickal near Mulanthuruthy, 20 km. from the fast growing Metro of Kerala. It is registered under the Charitable Trust Act- Reg. No. 71/IV/01
Many of them are forced to be confined to bed all their life and depend on others for their livelihood and even routine personal requirements, leading to further frustration and depression. Making them independent is the motive of Swasraya.
Swasraya Training and Rehabilitation Centre is the brainchild of Reji Abraham, himself a paraplegic for life, was founded in 2000.
